ELMBRIDGE councillors are set to impose a news blackout on any discussions and decisions about the Stompond Lane/Waterside Drive controversy.
The decision to prevent public scrutiny of their actions was taken at the meeting of the council’s Member Task Group on March 5.
The meeting was chaired by Mr. Elmer. It was also attended by John O’Reilly, leader of the ruling Tory group and one of the driving forces behind the Waterside Drive plans. He is not a registered member of the working party.
The minutes of the meeting reveal that members “noted that the business of the task group was not subject to the Access to Information provisions of the Local Government Act 1972.
“That being the case, the infrormation received by the task group and their deliberations would not be open to the public.
“There was therefore a general expectation that future business would be kept confidential to the Task Group, subject to normal Freedom of Informatiion rules.”
Some councillors are known to have been disturbed by the revelation of a leaked letter from the council’s solicitors in a recent Surrey Herald which stated that “Plans have already been formulated with regards to development of the site (Stompond Lane) for residential purposes ( 115 dwellings can be accommodated on the site”
However in another local newspaper published the day before the Herald’s revelation John O’Reilly said the suggestion was “absolute rubbish” and totally untrue. He said: “There are absolutely no plans. We’ve set up a task group of councillors to deal with this and they’ve only had their first meeting so the notion that we’ve decided on any development, of any size, is preposterous and wholly without foundation.
“The council has decided absolutely nothing and would not do anything so arrogant. We have no firm ideas at this stage whatsoever.”
So completely opposite were those reports that it could only be surmised that one side or the other was being economical with the truth.
We will leave you to decide.

The following is an open letter to John O’Reilly, leader of the ruling Tory group ion Elmbridge Council by Trevor Sherwood, a former councillor and long-standing Conservative after the recent public exhibition of the council’s plans for Waterside Drive.

Dear John
Your presentation on Wednesday was very good as a show, however the content was flawed on many points which most people realised.
We are very disappointed that you won the vote to spend the £65K of ratepayers funds, as it is money down the drain and a very high risk gamble, as it is not expected that you will win the hearing and also your plan is to build on Green Belt Land, where it is unlikely that you will get consent.
Some of the flaws in your and fellow Conservative arguments are:
1) You say that you have no plans to sell the Stompond Lane site for development, but this can’t be correct as where else would you get the stated £6.5m to develop the Waterside Drive site.
2) The current maintenance costs for Stompond Lane is £70K pa so your figure of £250K pa is far too high and not realistic. I have spoken
to nobody that believes this figure which your whole argument was based upon.
3) It has been stated that it is the Football Club’s long term plan to develop the whole 7.5 acres but this is not possible as the land is owned
by EBC and not the Club.
4) The Club have offered £1.7m “OR MARKET VALUE” for the strip of land to build the 10 houses along Stompond Lane, so they are
not asking for it to be donated or pick it up at a bargain price, as has been stated.
The Club is reasonably near the centre of Walton and want to remain there near the heart of the community.
I understand that their plan is to make a little money from the 10 houses in order to build a new stadium, a children’s nursery, a gym and a
modern clinic with medical theatre on site. This would generate additional revenue streams for the Club to grow and prosper and be a great service to the residents of Walton. Also they may be prepared to take on some of the maintenance responsibility which again makes your figures totally unrealistic.
I believe that negotiations have been going on since before the lease expired in 2004, so the matter should have been resolved years ago.
EBC has allowed the site to become rather run down over this period and it seems to me the Club are wishing to bring it up to a high standard and to its previous glory.
As a long standing Conservative voter I am disappointed that it is mainly the Conservative Councillors who seem to be fighting both the Club and the wishes of Walton Residents.
Kind Regards,
Trevor Sherwood

Saturday 28 April 2012. Ryman League, Division One South.

Walton & Hersham 4 Sittingbourne 0.

Swans maintained their excellent late run of form with a convincing win in their last game of the season at a soggy, muddy Stompond Lane. They had enough chances in the first-half to be comfortably ahead at the break, but had to settle for Jason Henry’s early strike. Their superiority over the struggling visitors finally told in the second-half, and they could well have added to their further three goals.

With Dan Sintim starting a four match suspension Ashlee Quashie came into defence, but Graeme Purdy was free to return from his ban, with Harry Smart dropping to the bench. With persistent rain adding to the effects of the recent spell of wet weather, it was touch and go whether the match went ahead, with some surface water lying on the pitch, but in difficult circumstances Swans still played some excellent football.

They got off to just the start they needed, taking the lead after seven minutes when Henry struck a fine, left-foot half volley from just inside the box that visiting goalkeeper Adam Woodward got a hand to, but could not keep out of the right, top corner. Phil Williams soon went close to making it 2-0, but when a knock forward picked him out in front of goal his lob volley went just over. Williams was then just inches away from getting a touch when Henry made a run on the right before getting the ball over into the box.

Sittingbourne immediately broke forward for their first attack, and Hicham Akhazzan had a chance on the left, but he dragged his shot across goal and wide of the far-post.

Williams was taking up great positions in the box, but he was just closed out when Liam Collins picked him out on the left with a fine ball over from the right. Then he could not bring the ball under instant control when a long ball played him in, and Sittingbourne’s Carl McGeehan just got a foot in to deny him. Williams could well have had a hat-trick inside the first half hour, and he showed superb touch in pulling a high ball down in front of goal, only to shank his attempted half-volley. Ten minutes before the break Josh Bonnett got to the line on the right before setting up Collins to send in a dangerous cross that caused McGeehan to almost head into his own goal as the ball just cleared the crossbar. Henry then just failed to turn the ball in from close range when Purdy crossed from the right.

Williams was sent bursting clear, but keeper Woodward was quickly out to save at his feet, injuring himself in the process, and the Swans’ player picked up a booking that seemed harsh in the circumstances. Woodward could not continue in the second-half and central defender McGeehan had to replace him in goal, with Chris Edwards coming on.

McGeehan was soon in action, clearing off the line from Purdy when Collins drove the ball over from the left. Collins quickly got possession on the right to cross the ball to Henry, whose looping header was well kept out by the stand-in keeper.

The visitors soon created a half-chance when Luke Girt got the ball through to Joe Goldsmith, but he put his shot well wide of the right-post.

Just before the hour Bonnett’s left-side corner was almost deflected into their own goal by Sittingbourne, and Josh Webb’s low ball in from the right was put wide at the near-post by Purdy.

Swans’ overdue second goal finally came with just over twenty minutes left, Purdy heading home from Collins’ right-side corner-kick. Henry almost got Purdy in before Swans made it 3-0 with eight minutes remaining with a fine goal. Bonnett played a superb ball down the left to Smart, who had earlier replaced Williams, and he cut inside before curling a terrific, low shot just inside the far-post.

Very quickly it was almost 4-0 as Bonnett was allowed to rob a Sittingbourne defender inside the left of the box, and when he played the ball in both Henry and Purdy somehow failed to force the ball over the line. With five minutes remaining Bonnett played another terrific pass to put Henry through, but McGeehan did well to come out and block. It was soon 4-0 however, as with a minute remaining Smart played Purdy into the right of the box, and his shot just made it into the far corner with Sittingbourne’s Luke Girt desperately trying, but just failing, to prevent the ball from crossing the line. Bonnett should have increased the lead in stoppage-time, but he headed over from in front of goal when Smart crossed a great ball from the right.

Swans’ Team: Rodney Chiweshe, Josh Webb, Shaun Elliott, Victor Kiri (Jerome Maledon 56’), James Nicholls, Ashlee Quashie (Damian Matthews 70’), Liam Collins, Josh Bonnett, Graeme Purdy, Phil Williams (Harry Smart 65’), Jason Henry. Subs. not used: Stuart Derry, Sheikh Ceesay. Scorers: Henry (7’), Purdy (69’ & 89’), Smart (82’). Caution: P. Williams, foul (39’)

Sittingbourne Team: Woodward (Edwards 45’), J. Hogg, Palfrey, A. Hogg (Nwoko 66’), Lyall, McGeehan, Girt, Moore, Kayembe, Goldsmith, Akhazzan. Subs. not used: Holness, Dowley.

Saturday 21 April 2012. Ryman League, Division One South.

Bognor Regis Town 1 Walton & Hersham 1.

Another superb performance by Swans saw them inflict a severe blow to the Sussex club’s automatic promotion hopes, the result knocking them off top spot in the division. It could well have been worse for the home side however, as they were extremely fortunate to go in at the break 1-0 up rather than at least two goals down. Swans had made light of the two clubs’ relative positions in the table by dominating their hosts in the first-half, and although Bognor posed a much greater threat in the second-half, Swans deservedly equalised with a quarter of an hour remaining. The end of the season is now coming too quickly for a Walton side that has hit a rich vein of form and performance.

With Graeme Purdy serving the second of his two match suspension Swans fielded an unchanged line-up.

The home side looked determined to impose themselves early, and with just under ten minutes played Ben Johnson did well inside the left of the penalty area before driving the ball across the six-yard box, where it took a deflection to go wide. Following Kane Wills’ right-side corner the ball looped up and James Crane got in a close-range header that Swans’ goalkeeper Rodney Chiweshe did superbly to push away.

Phil Williams was to be a thorn in the side of the Bognor defence all match, and he first threatened by combining on the left with Shaun Elliott and getting to the line in the box before being closed out. Swans had a great opportunity to take the lead just before the quarter of an hour. Williams collected the ball in the centre-circle before making a terrific burst down the middle that took him clear to the edge of the box with just home keeper Craig Stoner to beat. With Harry Smart unmarked to his left and Jason Henry unmarked to his right Williams tried to slip the ball past Stoner, but the keeper was able to come out and block.

A long ball down the left by Bognor was too high for Josh Webb to cut out and Johnson found space behind him before getting the ball over, and when it came to Ashley Robinson just outside the box he drove a shot well over.

Swans won a free-kick deep on the left, and Liam Collins’ kick was just too high to pick out James Nicholls at the far-post. Swans continued to look the better of the two sides, and midway through the half Smart played Henry into the right of the box, and he was just denied by Johnson’s tackle at the expense of a corner-kick. Josh Bonnett played the kick short to Collins, and his ball to the far-post was headed wide by Dan Sintim.

Bognor tried to fashion an opening by building up an attack around the edge of Swans’ penalty area, but Wills finally sent a shot wide of the right-post.

Victor Kiri and Bonnett combined to set up Elliott on the left to get in a dangerous cross that forced a home defender to head the ball over his own goal. Bonnett’s corner from the right picked out Nicholls at the far-post, but his strong, downward header was superbly deflected over by keeper Stoner. Swans were desperately unlucky not to take a deserved lead after 28 minutes when Bognor were panicked into conceding a needless corner on the left. Webb played the kick short to Bonnett, and he laid the ball inside to Collins just outside the box for the Swans’ midfielder to strike a tremendous, low shot that thumped against the left-post.

The lively Johnson was looking the home side’s main threat, and he tried a snap shot from the edge of the box that Chiweshe got well behind to take on his line.

Swans won another corner on the left, and following Webb’s kick Collins knocked the ball forward into the box to Williams, who just failed to find the space for a shot. With 37 minutes played Swans again went close to making the breakthrough when Henry burst down the right to send in a high cross that Stoner could not get to. Williams was unmarked at the far-post, but just failed to get his head to the ball, that then went on to rebound away off the upright.

With five minutes left to the break Bognor had an opportunity when they were somewhat fortunate to be awarded a free-kick just outside the box on the right, but Swans’ defensive wall did its job as Johnson twice drove the ball into it. Swans’ defence had coped well with a Bognor attack that had already notched up a century of league goals, but they had to thank Chiweshe for a terrific save that kept them level. Webb was unfortunate to slip over, and this allowed James Crane to get possession on the left, and he hit a fine shot from outside the box that looked destined for the far, top corner, but Chiweshe dived to his left to push the ball wide in superb fashion. Chiweshe then had to be quickly out to deny Crane after Johnson had knocked the ball forward into the box. Bognor had begun too look more threatening, but on the run of play in the first-half they were fortunate to have reached the final minute still level, so when they scored it was an injustice to Swans, particularly as the goal had a fair element of good fortune about it. Nicholls looked to have no problem in cutting out a hopeful ball down the left, but he was caught out by the bounce off the pitch, and Crane was allowed to get past him. Swans’ defence was caught open, and Crane crossed the ball into the six-yard box to the unmarked Terry Dodd, who had the simple task of beating the exposed Chiweshe.

Bognor were quickest out of the blocks in the second-half and Sintim had to head over his own bar when Johnson crossed from the left. Swans’ first attack of the second-half saw Henry do well on the right before whipping in a low cross to the near-post, where Williams was just prevented from turning the ball in. Their determination to equalise almost proved Swans’ undoing ten minutes into the half when an attack broke down. They were caught on the break with just Sintim back to deal with four home players, but fortunately the attack ended with Wills volleying over the bar.

Swans continued to find it more difficult to build up attacks in the second-half, but Bognor still could not handle the runs of Williams, and Ben Andrews had to resort to pulling him back after being shown a clean pair of heels, and was duly booked.

28 minutes into the second-half Chiweshe got well behind a first-time shot from Dodd after Nicholls’ attempt to head clear had only sent the ball as far as the Bognor striker. But three minutes later the 600 plus home support were stunned into silence when Swans equalised. Williams left Jon Marzetti trailing in his wake as he surged into the box on the left before sending the ball across the six-yard box. Substitute Ashlee Quashie helped the ball on to Henry, who swept it into the roof of the net.

The home side looked shell shocked, and Williams was soon getting forward to the left edge of the box before striking a fine, right-foot shot just over the far, top corner of the goal. Bognor right-back Marzetti had no answer to Williams, and he was again left trailing by the Swans’ player, who made a terrific burst into the left of the box before delivering a low cross to the near-post that just failed to pick out a colleague.

The play had become stretched, and with ten minutes left Swans were again thankful to Chiweshe, who pulled off a stunning save to push the ball round the post when Bognor substitute Steve Harper thumped in a close-range volley at the far-post following a cross from the left.

Williams set off on another terrific run that took him from halfway and into the left of the box, but Stoner was able to cut out the cross. Bognor immediately broke, and Chiweshe had to go down to save a shot.

The hapless Marzetti was taken off to save him from any more torment by Williams, but Crane’s attempt to end another burst by the Swans’ speedster by bringing him down earned the Bognor player a yellow card.

In the final minute of normal-time Swans almost snatched all three points. An attempted back-pass sent the ball straight to Quashie inside the right of the box, and he got in a first-time shot, but Stoner had spotted the danger and was out to block.

Bognor knew that they would require nothing less than a win to ensure automatic promotion, and two minutes into stoppage-time keeper Stoner went up the other end for a corner-kick. The ball was cleared up the field to send Henry bursting clear, but with the goalkeeper absent it was deemed there was only one player between Henry and the goal, although there was some doubt about that, and he was flagged offside.

Swans’ Team: Rodney Chiweshe, Josh Webb, Shaun Elliott, Victor Kiri, James Nicholls, Dan Sintim, Liam Collins (Ashlee Quashie 63’), Josh Bonnett, Phil Williams, Harry Smart (Jerome Maledon 68’), Jason Henry.

Saturday 14 April 2012. Ryman League, Division One South.

Eastbourne Town 1 Walton & Hersham 3.

This win took Swans above their hosts into twelfth spot in the division, but although there is little to separate the clubs in the table, there looked a huge gulf on the pitch as the home side was totally outplayed for three quarters of the match. The Sussex club had little answer to Swans’ excellent passing and movement, and they were somewhat fortunate to find themselves only 3-0 down before the hour. Liam Collins and the non-stop Victor Kiri were outstanding in a Swans’ midfield that denied the home side any degree of meaningful possession during a one-sided first-half. The excellent Josh Bonnett scored his first two goals for the club, and was a constant thorn in the side of Eastbourne as they had problems picking him up as he drifted around their last third of the pitch.

The home side only came into the match as a force after Dan Sintim was sent off, along with Eastbourne’s Matt Geard, with twenty minutes remaining, as with fellow central defender James Nicholls having already been substituted Swans started to lose their shape. It was a case of déjà vu for Sintim, as he had also been red-carded in the corresponding fixture at Stompond Lane back in September.

On the 39th anniversary of their FA Amateur Cup triumph Swans had to make one enforced change with Graeme Purdy starting a two-match suspension, Phil Williams coming into the starting line-up, but they made light of the loss of their in-form striker.

Swans quickly settled down, dominating from the first whistle, and they went close to taking a twelfth minute lead. Collins worked the ball out to Jason Henry in space on the right, and his low ball across the six-yard box was inches away from being converted by Harry Smart. Any attempts by the home side to get forward were quickly snuffed out by Swans’ back four, with Nicholls and Sintim dominant in the middle. The Eastbourne defence however was under almost constant pressure, and midway through the half Bonnett knocked the ball down to Smart just outside the box on the left, and he struck a fine, right-foot half-volley that home goalkeeper Tom Godfrey went down to save. Collins then played the ball to Shaun Elliott on the left, and his powerfully driven cross just cleared the near, top-corner of the home goal.

It was almost a half an hour of play before Eastbourne threatened, the ball running to Danny Curd inside the right of the box to hit a low shot that Swans’ keeper Rodney Chiweshe got well behind to save.

Swans quickly responded by taking a well-deserved lead. Some terrific play by Kiri on the left saw him battle to win the ball before playing it inside to Bonnett 25 yards out. Bonnett set himself before driving in a strong, low shot that beat the diving Godfrey to his right.

Williams almost made it 2-0 straight from the restart when he cut inside from the left before sending a shot just over the far, top-corner. Smart tried his luck with a free-kick from 35 yards, but the ball flew wide of the left-post, before Swans doubled their lead after 34 minutes. Williams made a fine, surging run into the box to get in a shot that was blocked, but Bonnett latched onto the ball before driving it into the roof of the net from twelve yards.

Swans were caught out when Eastbourne broke forward down the left after Josh Webb had lost the ball close to halfway, and Chiweshe had to save a shot to his near-post. Williams was soon bursting clear into the left of the home box, but with Bonnett unmarked in the middle, he couldn’t pick out his teammate and Bonnett’s chance of a hat-trick went begging. Eastbourne had a half-chance with the scheduled minute of first-half stoppage-time played when the ball was knocked back to Sam Crabb, but his low shot was well stopped by Chiweshe.

Swans soon mounted an attack after the resumption when Kiri played a fine pass to Bonnett on the left. Williams and Henry were both waiting in the six-yard box when the ball was played in, but Henry was forced into volleying over.

Eastbourne were almost solely relying on long balls out of defence catching Swans out, and they almost did so when a high ball down the middle sent Geard breaking clear, but the substitute, who had come on for the second-half, drove his attempt well over.

Swans made it 3-0 eight minutes into the second-half. Williams burst clear into the box on the left to get in a shot that Godfrey could only push away, and Henry followed up inside the right of the six-yard box before driving the ball into the roof of the net. Nicholls was soon replaced in the middle of Swans’ defence by Damian Matthews. Smart did well, spinning on the edge of the box on the right to strike a fine, left-foot shot that passed wide of the right-post.

Midway through the second-half the home side gave themselves a lifeline by getting a goal back. Swans were exposed down their left, and when the ball was played into the middle, Curd was left unmarked to easily beat Chiweshe.

Then with just over twenty minutes remaining Swans got the ball clear down the left, but the assistant referee flagged for an incident back by the corner flag. Apparently, following Sintim’s tackle, Geard had elbowed the Swans’ defender and Sintim had retaliated. Both players were sent-off, with the Eastbourne substitute’s match having lasted 24 minutes.

Williams should have sealed the win for Swans with twelve minutes left when he got through into the box with just Godfrey to beat, but his attempt to lob the keeper went over the bar. A superb ball out of defence by Elliott sent Smart racing clear down the left, but after cutting inside, Smart shot disappointingly well over.

Swans did not look as comfortable, as they had lost their shape somewhat and were no longer bossing the match. They still posed a threat however, and with five minutes remaining Webb skipped past the challenge of Neil Watts on the right to drive in a good, low cross that was just cleared away.

Curd continued to be Eastbourne’s main threat, and he went close to cutting the deficit further with a terrific shot out of the blue from 30 yards that clipped the top of the crossbar. The play had become very stretched, and in the final minute of normal time Smart cut in from the right to get in a good, left-foot strike that home keeper Godfrey beat away.

In stoppage-time Eastbourne had two further chances, that if either had resulted in a goal the score would have been undeservedly close. Chiweshe had to make a fine, full-length save to fingertip a shot round his right-post after substitute Ashlee Quashie’s attempt to head clear had only resulted in putting his defence in trouble. Then the ball was again not cleared, and Curd got in on the right to drive in a shot that clipped the far-post.

Swans’ Team: Rodney Chiweshe, Josh Webb, Shaun Elliott, Victor Kiri, James Nicholls (Damian Matthews 54’), Dan Sintim, Liam Collins, Josh Bonnett, Phil Williams, Harry Smart, Jason Henry (Ashlee Quashie 77’). Subs. not used: Stuart Derry, Jerome Maledon, Sheikh Ceesay. Scorers: Bonnett (29’ & 34’), Henry (53’). Dismissal: Sintim, retaliation (69’).

Eastbourne Team: Godfrey, Denton, Storrie (Geard 45’), Watts, Fogden, Hollobone (Summerbell 64′), Davidson, Kirkwood, Curd, Crabb, Brooks (Ferdinando 80’). Subs. not used: Kessack, Thorp. Scorer: Curd (66’). Cautions: Watts, dissent (65’), Fogden, foul (84’). Dismissal: Geard, foul (69’).
