Monday 21st October 2019. Surrey Premier Cup, 1st Round.
Carshalton Athletic U23 3 Walton & Hersham 0.
A much-changed Swans’ team took to the pitch at Colston Avenue as the opportunity was taken to give match-time to players and senior experience to some of the club’s U18 squad. They faced a talented looking Robins’ development side that took advantage of coming up against a team lacking the experience of playing together, and conceded three goals before the break. The home side took the lead after just six minutes, scoring from inside the 6 yard box as a free-kick was delivered from out by the left touchline. A strong shot from out on the left was then saved at his near-post by U18 goalkeeper Luke Wynn-Lintern. But the young keeper was beaten again after 20 minutes, and the goal resulted from a free-kick again not being dealt with. The kick from the left was delivered to the far-post, and when the ball was headed back it was clipped in from inside the 6 yard box. Swans went close to pulling a goal back when Alvin Sarmiento played Thomas Lim down the right to get the ball over to the far-post, where it was met on the volley by Simeon Dennis, but it was just kept out by the Robins’ keeper. With half an hour played Lim did well on the left before delivering a fine ball into the box, where it was met with a powerful, close-in header by Hamzah Williams, but the home keeper just managed to deflect it over his crossbar. James Young was then at the far-post to meet Sarmiento’s free-kick from the right, but the keeper again just managed to keep the ball out. As the final five minutes of the half approached Carshalton had a shot deflected for a corner, from which Swans broke with Parish Muirhead getting forward on the right. He struck a fine diagonal pass to pick out Dennis on the left, but after setting himself his shot was just deflected onto the crossbar by the keeper. Swans had looked like getting back into the tie, but in the final minute of the half the home side got to the byline on the right, and when the ball was pulled back it was driven past Wynn-Lintern to make it 3-0. The Swans’ keeper was soon brought into action in the second-half, getting behind a free-header following a free-kick from the right. Williams put a header wide at the far-post for Swans from Sarmiento’s free-kick from the left, before his long ball set up a chance for Young by putting him clear into the box, but he dwelt too long and was closed out, having to settle for a corner. With a quarter of an hour remaining Sarmiento made a neat turn in the box, but clipped the ball over the bar. The home side could have extended their lead when they broke clear after winning the ball in midfield, but Wynn-Lintern made a fine save. Williams picked up an injury and had to come off, leaving Swans to play out the final ten minutes with ten men. They did get the ball in the net however with two minutes of normal-time remaining, substitute Miguel Tabayi-Farinha neatly converting Sarmiento’s cross from the left, but he was judged offside.
